What to expect on the day of your appointment

01

On the day of your appointment, please arrive 15 minutes prior to your appointment  with your insurance card and a valid form of ID.  You will be asked to fill out some paperwork if you have not done so already (see Forms).

02

In the clinic room, you will be asked to change into your tank top or shorts, if you are not already wearing them. The physician will conduct a patient interview and a physical exam prior to testing.

03

There are two components to testing - the NCS (nerve conduction study) which consists of an electrical stimulus; and, an EMG (electromyography) which involves a thin needle which listens to your muscles. An additional ultrasound evaluation may be performed if clinically necessary.

04

Prior to the conclusion of your appointment, you will receive a report and we will discuss your results and answer your questions. You will leave with a copy of the report and a copy will be faxed to your referring physician/provider.

This concludes your appointment. You will need to follow-up with your referring provider/physician for next steps.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How long will this test take?

    • Appointments are scheduled for one hour and typically last that long. That being said, some evaluations will require more time. I will use as much (or as little) time as needed to provide the most thorough evaluation and give an accurate diagnosis.

    • Appointments are scheduled for either bilateral upper or lower limbs. If your physician/provider has ordered both upper and lower limb evaluations, this will require 2 separate appointments.

  • Will the test be painful?

    • Some portions of the test may be uncomfortable. Some patients have described it as a "snapping rubber band" or "static electric shock." However, most patients find it easier than expected once the test is underway. Rarely, some patients experience some temporary tingling or muscle soreness after the exam.

  • Will I need someone to accompany me? Will I need a driver?

    • No, you will not need a driver. You may bring one family member/friend with you into the clinic room if you wish.

  • What am I not allowed to do?

    • Do not wear any lotion/oils on your skin prior to your test. (This means no lotions/oils after you shower). Lotion will be available immediately after the test.

  • Do I need to be fasting before my appointment?

    • No. Please feel free to eat and drink normally before the test.

  • Should I take my medications prior to my appointment?

    • YES. Please take all your regular medications, as prescribed.

  • When will I get my results?
